Farmyard Watercolours
In amongst doing a couple of commissions this week, I've been turning my hand back to watercolours.
Many of the farmyard animals I'd been painting in acrylics transfer pretty well to watercolour and if I do say so, look better than the original acrylics. They are most enjoyable to paint and the results are pretty satisfying. I'm keeping them small so customers can collect a few without completely obliterating their walls. Not sure how long they'll be around for but I certainly have a few on ebay this week - http://stores.ebay.co.uk/orwell-gallery Thursday, June 24, 2004 Yet another Sutherland highlight... You'd never guess that I was up in Sutherland on my easter holidays earlier this year. This is one of the classic end-on views of Stac Pollaidh. I really struggle to paint a landscape without foreground, so this one was quite difficult. Next time I try it, I'll add in some land and broom in the immediate foreground. Because I lacked foreground with the photo I was working from, I was experimenting to add some interest to the painting. The water was coated with a mix of pearlescent medium and clear varnish, and the hills coated with clear varnish. The edges of the hills have been outlined in gold. It does add something, but it wont be to everyone's taste. http://www.orwellgallery.co.uk/contemporary-scottish-art/1222.htm Wednesday, June 23, 2004 Sandwood Bay It has to be said, this is not the first painting I've done of the beach at Sandwood Bay. Sandwood lies about 6 miles from Cape Wrath at the north-west tip of Sutherland. Most people who go there don't forget it in a hurry. A four mile walk from the nearest road takes you into this often deserted, and certainly very special beach. In the painting I've been trying to bring as many colours as possible into the beach whilst keeping it loose and block-like to try and convey perhaps a slight sense of drama, and perhaps a sense of what a wild place you are in. Anyway, it's one of may favourite beaches in Scotland and one that I'll doubtless paint again. http://www.orwellgallery.co.uk/contemporary-scottish-art/1221.htm Monday, June 21, 2004 Soft, cozy landscapes Last night I had the urge to paint something softer than the usual in-your-face bright paintings I usually sell. I must say, it was most soothing. The subject I picked was Suilven - a mountain way up in Sutherland in the north-west of Scotland. I couldn't completely let go of the usual landscape features though and made sure I included a cottage and a telegraph pole. Apart from that though, I picked muted colours, reasonably gentle contrasts and built it up in lots of layers. What I ended up with was a painting I am extremely happy with, and would be proud to sell to anyone. See it here: http://www.orwellgallery.co.uk/contemporary-scottish-art/1220.htm Wednesday, June 09, 2004 Golf art example ![]() Here's one of these golf pix. Golf Art
Last night I realised I'd been going about the golf art all wrong. I'd been trying to paint Scottish golf courses in a contemporary manner. No wonder few people liked them. They all looked the same. So I had a go at a few scribbles and came up with a couple of line and wash pictures. Big characters with minimal landscape.
That's more like it. Make the golfers and the situations stand out. Whether it's St Andrews or Troon doesn't matter greatly. That bit of the picture plays second fiddle to what the golfers are doing. Expect to see more of this. stores.ebay.co.uk/orwell-gallery |
